Johnson Trading Gallery invites you to join us for the opening of FURNITURE 2013 – the first show in our new space on Wednesday, May 8th from 6 – 9 PM.

Furniture 2013 – the title has the intentional ring of a crude sci-fi film, befitting of Johnson Trading Gallery’s new Queens space located in a former cinema. The show is an immersive environment arranged as sprawling vignettes that make connections between work created in 2013 and work not created in 2013. The exhibition introduces four designers/artists – Chris Schanck, Jack Craig, Katie Stout and Luke Armitstead – in addition to showcasing pieces from Johnson Trading Gallery’s broad collection of contemporary design, art and mid-century furniture.

We hope to see you at the show! Until then here are images of some of the new work we will be showing.

“Negotiation, circulation, and the process of disposal each calls for attention in this show of many sources. Robert Loughlin’s square-jawed, cigarette-smoking “Brute” is never out of view. At a time when antiques were the hot item, Loughlin triggered the market craze for midcentury retro furnishings. The gallery, replete with the artist’s furniture, paintings, and other objects, has an air of the flea markets from which he originally scouted some of the works.”

Since 2003 Ben Aranda and Chris Lasch have dedicated themselves to creating new design opportunities through experimental research and processes. Much of their explorative work is driven by their constant search and application of patterns found in the natural world.

Aranda/Lasch are the designers of the Quasi Table and Quasi Mirror.

Kwangho Lee continues to kill it with his installation of woven works in the Design and Art (DNA) exhibition at Daegu Art Museum in Deagu, Korea.

The exhibition presupposes that the distinction between art and design is no longer relevant. DNA includes the works of 11 artists and designers whose works encompass the blurred line between pre-conceived notions of art and design and explore how both are increasingly integrating into everyday social and cultural realms.
